Professional identity construction: perception of occupational therapy undergraduates

Abstract Introduction Professional identity is built by several factors, however, in the debate among occupational therapists, a divergence appears between desire for unique and established or complex dynamic identities. Objective To understand perceptions of therapy students about professional identity, defining constituent elements this process. Method Quantitative-qualitative descriptive research composed thematic analyzes an online questionnaire, answered 177 undergraduate courses from 23 Brazilian Higher Education Institutions. It presents analysis seven questions (open and/or closed) search elements, which were categorized thematically into: knowledge, actions postures; audiences, demands specialties; contributions profession. Results The use terms, values postures (such as activity, occupation, care, inclusion, humanization creativity) are revealed; target audiences people with difficulties, disabilities conditions related to health, social education); addition procedures objectives practice autonomy, independence quality life). results show relationship recognition, publics profession dedicated, identifies constitutes ethical-political commitments, postures, values, practice, predominantly health rehabilitation. Conclusion occupations, demands, specialties appeared reveal, through interests, definitions explanations profession, construction belonging multiplicity international national epistemic perspectives used complementary way without apparent distinction.
